Mini Trips

What’s a Mini?

Mini trips are ones that are based out of where I originate from, the Mid-West. These trips will take us anywhere from 1 to 6 hours away from our home base of Toledo, Ohio… and anyone in the general area can join! We’ve had people join from all of the surrounding states… so if you’re in that wide circle, come along with us!

Minis are short group trips, usually ranging from one to five days, that provides group travel in a more local setting. The main focus of each Mini will almost always be some sort of outdoor adventure… whether it be hiking, camping, climbing, kayaking, white water rafting, backpacking, caving or biking, I want to provide opportunities for people to get out and enjoy the outdoors while making new friends and connecting with the travel family we are creating.

So if you’re in the area, please join us!

2026 Minis…

I start taking deposits January 17th starting at noon (EST).

If you have any questions about the Minis or how to sign up, please email acornexpeditions@gmail.com for more info.

We’re going on YEAR FOUR of exploring caves in the Midwest. This year “cave day” is actually an entire CAVE WEEKEND! We’ll be heading to Indiana to explore 4 different caves. We’ll start by crawling our way through Marengo Cave on a true caving adventure. We’ll be getting wet and dirty while exploring the natural cave, even visiting an underground waterfall! The next day we’ll stay a little cleaner and explore Blue Springs Cavern, Indiana Caverns and Squire Boone Caverns either by foot or by boat. When not exploring, we’ll be staying in a cabin all together or eating at local restaurants. If you like getting dirty, this one is for you!

    What are we doing?

Have you done it? Have you become a birder yet? NO?? Don’t worry, it’s coming for you. For the rest of us sane people who love a good feathered friend, LETS GO BIRDING! Did you know that the Toledo area is one of the best places to go birding during spring migration season? We are known as the “Warbler Capital of the World” and hundreds of people flock from all over the WORLD to bird just a simple 30 minutes away from Toledo. So join me, an extremely amateur but overly enthusiastic baby birder, and Carmen, a birder from birth and Acorn Bird Mother, as we take you to all the birding hotspots at the end of the Biggest Week in American Birding. We’ll be camping at Maumee Bay State Park, where I’m sure we’ll wake up early to see who has fluttered over to our campsites. Then we will literally spend the entire weekend birding at all the surrounding parks. We’ll play some bird bingo, I’ll have some bird presents for everyone, AND we could even play Wingspan at night by headlamp! BIRDS!

We’ll be spending two days paddling on the AuSable River, camping along the river as we go. That means you’ll need to pack up your camping gear, toss it in a canoe and enjoy the outdoors as we paddle together in 5 canoes. If you don’t have your own partner, don’t worry! We’ll buddy you up with someone and you’ll either become the best of friends or the worst of enemies as we navigate the waters together. Canoes are provided, camping gear is not (but I have a lot of stuff you can borrow if you need to!). If you’re looking for a unique outdoor adventure, this is the one for you!

Downtown Yellow Springs is an artsy and eclectic village, and we’ll wander and peruse some local shops and eat at some local eateries. I’m cramming us all into a large van and taking us on a journey. We’ll be whitewater rafting in Pennsylvania, doing a via ferrata in West Virginia, climbing a mountain in Virginia, hiking in two national parks (Shenandoah and New River Gorge), and cramming in as many trail miles as we can along the drive. We’ll also be staying at cute lodgings to make up for all the hard work. So if you want a longer Mini that’s big on adventure, this ones for you!
